Fairtrade Bake Sale for Helping Hooves!

On Friday 3rd November ’17 the Library held a Fairtrade Bake Sale to raise money for Helping Hooves and awareness about Fairtrade…

All the cakes, brownies, and biscuits were baked using Fairtrade ingredients, and we handed out awareness-raising leaflets and ‘I choose Fairtrade!’ stickers, to encourage staff and students to consider buying Fairtrade and making a difference.

“Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.”

We were raising money for Helping Hooves, which is local charity Library Staff volunteered with over the summer (see below!). Helping Hooves is a not-for-profit organisation supporting people experiencing change caused by illness, injury, recovery or other trauma. Check out the Helping Hooves website and Facebook page for more information about what they do!

We raised £103.14, so thank you everyone who stopped by to support us, raise awareness, and donate!

Over the summer Library Staff, along with staff from ELTSU, spent a day volunteering with Helping Hooves. We met in ‘The Snug’, a space where people can come together and do a range of relaxing and therapeutic activities including upcycling and art. Outside there is a Cottage Garden, which is the area we helped out with on our Team Volunteering Day. The plan was to create an outdoor space for relaxation and therapy, and so we spent the day tidying the ground, clearing weeds, and developing different areas – including a communal seating area, an area for reflection, and a small rockery.

It was a beautiful sunny day and our heave-hoing and hard work paid off! We had a great time volunteering as a team and working together for such a worthy cause.

Well done team!
